The leaves have been sometimes used as a remedy for diabetes. it has been shown, however, that neither the leaf powder nor the alcoholic extract prepared from it has any effect on the concentration of sugar in the blood or in the urine of patients suffering from diabetes. However, they cause hypoglycemia in experimental animals when administered orally or by injection. This effect is not due to any direct influence on the carbohydrate metabolism, but to indirect stimulation of insulin secretion by pancreas. No water-soluble or alcohol-soluble substance which destroys glucose in vitro has been identified in the leaves (1). The leaf powder is tasteless with a faint pleasant aromatic odor. It stimulates the heart and the circulatory system, increases the secretion of urine, and activates the uterus. The laxative property is attributed to the presence of anthraquinone derivatives. The drug has been used for parageusia, furunculosis and as an errhine. It has no perceptible bactericidal action in vitro (2). Gymnemic acid has anti-diabetic property. It inhibits dental plaque formation as well as melanin formation in culture medium. It is one of the components of a skin cosmetic for controlling freckles and blemishes. The average 70-kg man has roughly 15 grams of hyaluronan in his body, one-third of which is turned over (degraded and synthesised) every day.");
				jQuery("#pproperties").html("Nutriceutical properties");
				jQuery("#product-properties").html("<br/><b>Medical Applications </b><p style='margin-left:0'>Hyaluronan is naturally found in many tissues of the body, such as skin, cartilage, and the vitreous humor. It is therefore well suited to biomedical applications targeting these tissues. The first hyaluronan biomedical product, Healon, was developed in the 1970s and 1980s by Pharmacia, and is approved for use in eye surgery (i.e., corneal transplantation, cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery and surgery to repair retinal detachment). Other biomedical companies also produce brands of hyaluronan for ophthalmic surgery.</p><p style='margin-left:0'>Hyaluronan is also used to treat osteoarthritis of the knee. Such treatments, called viscosupplementation, are administered as a course of injections into the knee joint and are believed to supplement the viscosity of the joint fluid, thereby lubricating the joint, cushioning the joint, and producing an analgesic effect. It has also been suggested that hyaluronan has positive biochemical effects on cartilage cells. However, some placebo controlled studies have cast doubt on the efficacy of hyaluronan injections, and hyaluronan is recommended primarily as a last alternative to surgery. Oral use of hyaluronan has been lately suggested, although its effectiveness needs to be demonstrated. At present, there are some preliminary clinical studies that suggest that oral administration of Hyaluronan has a positive effect on osteoarthritis, but it remains to be seen if there is any real benefit to the treatment.</p><p style='margin-left:0'>Due to its high biocompatibility and its common presence in the extracellular matrix of tissues, hyaluronan is gaining popularity as a biomaterial scaffold in tissue engineering research. In some cancers, hyaluronan levels correlate well with malignancy and poor prognosis. Hyaluronan is thus often used as a tumor marker for prostate and breast cancer. It may also be used to monitor the progression of the disease.</p><p style='margin-left:0'>Hyaluronan may also be used postoperatively to induce tissue healing, notably after cataract surgery. Current models of wound healing propose that larger polymers of hyaluronic acid appear in the early stages of healing to physically make room for white blood cells, which mediate the immune response.</p><p style='margin-left:0'>Hyaluronan has also been used in the synthesis of biological scaffolds for wound healing applications. These scaffolds typically have proteins such as fibronectin attached to the hyaluronan to facilitate cell migration into the wound. This is particularly important for individuals with diabetes who suffer from chronic wounds.</p><p style='margin-left:0'>In 2007, the EMEA extended its approval of Hylan GF-20 as a treatment for ankle and shoulder osteoarthritis pain.</p><br/><br/><b>Cosmetic Applications</b><p style='margin-left:0'>Hyaluronan is a common ingredient in skin care products.</p><p style='margin-left:0'>In 2003 the FDA approved hyaluronan injections for filling soft tissue defects such as facial wrinkles. Restylane is a common trade name for the product. Hyaluronan injections temporarily smooth wrinkles by adding volume under the skin, with effects typically lasting for six months. People who have been on any blood medication with in the last five years should not inject this drug until the five year span is over. It is alleged that this drug is not suitable for use in elderly patients because it can cause memory loss, although there is no evidence in the literature of any negative cognitive effects attributable to hyaluronic acid injections.</p>");

Its antioxidant action reduces damage from compounds that are released. Quercetin also inhibits smooth muscle contraction, as well as degranulation of mast cells and basophils. Quercetin also inhibits many of the inflammatory products of steps in fatty acid metabolism, especially phospholipase A2 and lipoxy-genase enzyme production. This results in reduced formation of leucotrienes, which are 1000 times more inflammatory than histamine, and are linked to asthma, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, gout, ulcerative colitis, and possibly cancer. Quercetin was consistently effective in decreasing lipid peroxidation in stored whole red blood cells. An experiment with hydrogen peroxide-induced cytotoxicity and mutagenicity indicated that the catechol structure of polyphenols (o-dihydroxy) is critical to their effectiveness. In contrast, ferulic acid esters with an o-methoxyphenol structure and alpha-tocopherol were ineffective. In a study of type-II estrogen binding sites in human meningiomas, quercetin competed with the tumors for binding sites on tritiated estradiols, and inhibited in vitro the tumor cells' ability to incorporate bromodeoxyuridine. Quercetin treatment of tumor cell lines K562, Molt-4. Raji and MCAS caused condensation and fragmentation of nuclei, condensation of nuelear chromatin and fragmentation of DNA. C. mukulis the source of Indian bdellium, a gum-resin obtained by incision of the bark. Each plant yields about 1.5-2 lb. of the product which is collected in the cold season. The resin occurs in vermicular or stalactites pieces, pale yellow, brown, or dull-green in color with a bitter aromatic taste and balsamic odor. It is largely used as incense, as a fixative in perfumery, in medicine, and as a substitute for African bdellium. It is a common adulterant of myrrh.");

Like all oleo-resins it causes an increase of leucocytes in the blood and stimulates phagocytosis. It acts as a diaphoretic, expectorant and diuretic, and is said to be a uterine stimulant and emmenagogue. The resin is used in the form of a lotion for indolent ulcers and as a gargle in caries of the teeth, weak and spongy gums, pyorrhoea alveolaris, chronic tonsilitis and pharangytis, and ulcerated throat. It is also used as a stomachic in chronic dyspepsia with dilation and atony of the walls of the stomach. Inhalation of the fumes from burnt guggul is recommended in hay fever, acute and chronic nasal catarrh, chronic laryngitis, chronic bronchitis and phthisis . It is an ingredient of ointments for ulcers. Guggul or the gum resin from the bark shows anti inflammatory activity. The yield of resin can be increased by application of ethephon to the roots during growth. Guggul is reported to reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels in hypercholesteroemic subjects. It is reported to be more effective than clofibrate as a hypolipidemic, the latter is being withdrawn in USA because of its toxic side effects. When ethyl acetate soluble portion of the resin was fractionated into acidic and neutral portions, the neutral portion showed hypocholesterolemic activity while the acidic portion showed anti-inflammatory activity. An ayurvedic preparation 'thyrocap' having guggul as one of the constituents is used to control simple and diffuse goitre very effectively. During the treatment, T4 and T8 cells increase in the serum of patients. 'Kanchanar Guggul', also a composite preparation containing this resin is used in the treatment of swellings like galaganda, gandamala, granthi etc. Another composite formulation with guggul (pushkar guggul) as one of the ingredients and Inula racemosa is used in controlling hyperlipidemia and as an anti-anginal. It is reported to show activity equal to lovastatin and colestipol . Guggul is one of the constituents of the well known ayurvedic preparation 'rumalaya' which is used to treat and control rheumatoid arthritis. It is able to reduce pain and morning sickenss significantly. Guggul also enters into the formulation of the ayurvedic preparations 'laksha guggul' used in healing fractures and 'arogyavardhinivati' reported to control the parasite Entamoeba histolytica in intestinal and hepatic amoebiasis. The resin is also used in a shampoo against head parasites.</p>");

This effect is not due to any direct influence on the carbohydrate metabolism, but to indirect stimulation of insulin secretion by pancreas. No water-soluble or alcohol-soluble substance which destroys glucose in vitro has been identified in the leaves (1). The leaf powder is tasteless with a faint pleasant aromatic odor. It stimulates the heart and the circulatory system, increases the secretion of urine, and activates the uterus. The laxative property is attributed to the presence of anthraquinone derivatives. Milk thistle extract is most commonly recommended to counteract the harmful actions of alcohol on the liver(7). Long-term placebo-controlled, double blind studies have shown milk thistle extracts to be effective in patients with liver cirrhosis(8), chronic hepatitis(9), and even diabetes due to cirrhosis(10). However, there have also been studies that have shown no effect in cirrhosis patients(11). Milk thistle alters bile makeup, thereby potentially reducing risk of gallstones(12). Combination of milk thistle with potentially liver-damaging drugs has been shown to protect the liver(13). Milk Thistle contains three potent liver protective flavonoids: silybin, silydianin, and silychristin, known collectively as silymarin. Numerous clinical trials have shown that silymarin and milk thistle extract can protect the liver. Silymarin counteracts the toxic effects of a wide variety of poisons, including alcohol, carbon tetrachloride, acetaminophen overdose, and the Deathcap mushroom, Amanita phalloides which causes death within a day. The mechanism of action of silymarin involves altering the membranes of hepatic cells to inhibit passage of toxins and increasing cellular regeneration by stimulating protein synthesis. Silymarin also has antioxidant activity and inhibits inflammatory enzymes. Recent research has indicated that silymarin helps to protect against depletion of the antioxidant glutathione in liver cells. Milk Thistle extract has been the subject of numerous clinical trials and studies due to its potent liver protective properties. Milk thistle has been used for hepatitis, viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, jaundice, and fatty degeneration of the liver. Milk thistle has been used for indigestion since it promotes the flow of bile and thus helps emulsify fats. A positive therapeutic effect has been reported using silymarin for psoriasis. Sugar cane wax derived policosanol has been documented, by more than 100 animal and human clinical researches, in peer-reviewed journals to show the beneficial effects on lowering cholesterol levels, especially reducing LDL (the bad cholesterol) and raising HDL (the good cholesterol) levels. Scientific studies also indicate that Policosanol is a potent anti-oxidants in the prevention of lipid peroxidation, diene generation and overall LDL and HDL oxidation. Oxidation of LDL or HDL has been implicated in free radical pathology to the cardiovascular system. So far all of the clinical trials were conducted using sugar cane wax derived policosanols. The mechanism of action of most commercial pharmaceutical agents 'statins' aims to reduce cholesterol by the inhibition of the key cholesterol metabolic enzyme HMG-CoA reductase. Policosanol does not directly act as the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor. It seems to influence the metabolic pathways of the cholesterol synthesis within the liver, which accounts for the superior therapeutic ability of policosanol that it not only lowers total cholesterol and LDL, but also increases HDL. 'Policosanol seems to be a very promising phytochemical alternative to classic lipid-lowering agents such as the statins and deserves further evaluation.' At doses of 10 to 20 mg per day, policosanol lowers total cholesterol by 17% to 21% and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol by 21% to 29% and raises high-density lipoprotein cholesterol by 8% to 15%. Because higher doses have not been tested up to now, it cannot be excluded that effectiveness may be even greater. Daily doses of 10 mg of policosanol have been shown to be equally effective in lowering total or LDL cholesterol as the same dose of simvastatin or pravastatin. Triglyceride levels are not influenced by policosanol. There is evidence from in vitro studies that policosanol may inhibit hepatic cholesterol synthesis at a step before mevalonate generation, but direct inhibition of the hydroxy-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase is unlikely. Animal studies suggest that LDL catabolism may be enhanced, possibly through receptor-mediated mechanisms, but the precise mechanism of action is not understood yet. Policosanol has additional beneficial properties such as effects on smooth muscle cell proliferation, platelet aggregation, and LDL peroxidation. Very small amounts are present in lecithin. The body manufactures PS from phospholipid building blocks. PS research has used material derived from a bovine source. Currently, PS that is commercially available is derived from soya. PS is not an essential nutrient, and therefore dietary deficiencies do not occur. Adults age fifty and older, especially those with age-related declines in mental function (such as memory loss), may not synthesise enough PS, and appear most likely to benefit from supplemental PS.");
				jQuery("#pproperties").html("Nutriceutical properties");
				jQuery("#product-properties").html("<p style='margin-left:0px'>LipoSerine&trade; has been shown to help alleviate mental dysfunctions (affecting memory, speed of thinking, verbal facility, etc.) as well as affective disorders (depression, sleeplessness, 'flat mood', etc.). Phosphatidyl serine (PS) and Phosphatidic acid (PA) are naturally occurring phospholipids which are biochemically linked through the activity of the enzyme phospholipase D. PS has been thoroughly investigated with relation to neurological functions and it is now well documented that oral consumption of PS can rectify brain functions such as poor memory, and is of clear beneficial effect in the aged. PA has been shown to act as an important activator of various cellular functions and in this respect may counteract tissue deterioration which takes place in aging. It may similarly support tissue building. The biochemical relationship between PS and PA strongly suggests that they are synergistic in their action. LipoSerine&trade; contains as active ingredients roughly equal amounts of PS and PA. The results of the clinical trials with this formulation strongly suggest that this combination is superior to PS alone. It is recommended for the following Indications.Nutritional support for memory, learning, and emotional well-being, by protecting against disturbances of neurotransmitter systems, reduction of nerve connections (synapses) in the brain, and impairment of various higher mental activities. Especially indicated for individuals who have prematurely damaged brain cell membranes due to: nutritional deficiencies, free radical damage, alcohol, `hard drug' use and environmental toxins. PS is found in high concentrations in the brain and may help preserve, or even improve, some aspects of mental functioning in the elderly when taken in the amount of 300 mg per day for three to six months, according to double blind research(1 2 ). Placebo controlled(3) and double blind studies have shown mild benefits from PS supplementation when used in the amount of 300 mg per day for three to twelve weeks in patients with early Alzheimer's disease(4, 5). In one double blind study, the improvement on standardized tests of mental functioning averaged approximately 15%(6). Continued improvement has been reported up to three months beyond the end of the supplementation period(7). PS is not a cure for Alzheimer's disease. While it may reduce symptoms in the short term, at best PS probably slows the rate of deterioration rather than halting the progression altogether. For example, in a six-month trial, benefits began to fade after the fourth month(8). Preliminary research also suggests PS may be useful for the treatment of depression in the elderly(9 ). Most research has been conducted with PS derived from bovine (cow) brain tissue. Due to concerns about the possibility of humans contracting infectious diseases, soya-based PS supplements have completely replaced bovine-based PS. The soya- and the bovine-derived PS, however, are not structurally identical(10). Doctors and researchers have debated whether the structural differences could be important(11,12) , but so far only a few trials have studied the effects of soya-based PS. Preliminary animal research shows that the soya-derived PS does have effects on brain function similar to effects from the bovine source(13,14 )An isolated unpublished double blind human study used soya-derived PS in an evaluation of memory and mood benefits in non-demented, non-depressed elderly people with impaired memories and accompanying depression(15). In that three-month study, 300 mg per day of PS produced statistically significant benefits in the PS group compared with those taking placebo; however, the actual clinical improvement induced by taking soya-based PS was barely better than improvement seen in the placebo group. Science does not yet have an answer to the question of whether the benefits shown in research using PS from a bovine source will be seen in individuals taking the soya-based PS.</p>");

The Chinese name Huang Qi translates as 'Yellow leader,' referring to the yellow color of the root and its status as one of the most important tonic herbs. Traditional Chinese medicine used this herb for night sweats, deficiency of chi (e.g., fatigue, weakness, and loss of appetite), and diarrhea.</p>");
